85-year-old man dies following collision in Nicosia
An 85-year-old man, identified as Andreas Christou, has passed away following a fatal traffic accident in the Anthoupolis refugee settlement in Nicosia. The incident occurred on the afternoon of September 9, 2026, at approximately 3:45 p.m. at Archbishop Makarios Square, when a vehicle driven by a 38-year-old man struck the pedestrian while reversing.
The victim was rushed to the Nicosia General Hospital with a brain hemorrhage and remained in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries. Following the collision, the 38-year-old driver underwent alcohol and drug testing; while his alcohol test returned negative, the preliminary narcotest showed a positive result.
The Lakatamia Police Station is conducting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Authorities are currently reviewing the evidence to determine the exact cause of the collision and to proceed with the legal process concerning the driver involved.
