Elderly man in critical condition after traffic accident in Anthoupoli
An 85-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition following a traffic collision that occurred on the afternoon of September 9, 2026, in Nicosia. The incident took place around 3:45 p.m. at Archbishop Makarios Square, near the Anthoupoli refugee settlement.
The accident occurred when a 38-year-old driver, moving his vehicle in reverse, struck the pedestrian who was walking behind the car. The victim was transported by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage and remains in critical condition.
Following the collision, police conducted standard testing on the driver. While his alcohol test result was negative, the preliminary drug test (narcotest) returned a positive result. The Lakatamia Police Station has launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the next legal steps in the case.
