United Nations denies removal of UNFICYP commander following allegations

The United Nations has officially denied reports that the Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Lieutenant General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam of Bangladesh, has been removed from his post. The denial follows a report by Northeast News on September 9, which claimed that the commander had returned to Bangladesh on September 4 and was subsequently withdrawn from his mission due to written complaints regarding his conduct.

According to the allegations circulated in various media outlets, two officers, including the commander's aide-de-camp, reportedly submitted complaints regarding the Lieutenant General's alleged harsh and inappropriate behavior. These claims were purportedly presented to a United Nations medical or psychiatric service for review. While initial reports suggested his return to Bangladesh was related to these complaints, the mission's spokesperson, Aleem Siddique, clarified that the officer remains in his position and continues to exercise his full duties and responsibilities.

As of now, the United Nations maintains that there has been no change in the leadership status of the UNFICYP mission. The organization has emphasized that the Lieutenant General continues to serve in his role, effectively dismissing the speculation surrounding his professional future.
