United Nations denies removal of UNFICYP commander Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam

The United Nations has formally denied media reports alleging that the commander of the peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Lieutenant General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam, has been removed from his position. UNFICYP spokesperson Aleem Siddique confirmed on September 10 that the commander remains in his post and continues to carry out his professional duties, dismissing claims of his withdrawal as speculation.

Contradictory reports originated from Northeast News on September 9, which alleged that the Lieutenant General had been recalled to Bangladesh following complaints regarding his conduct toward subordinate officers. The reports claimed that two mission members, including his aide-de-camp, submitted written complaints alleging harsh and inappropriate treatment. According to these outlets, Minhazul Alam had traveled to Bangladesh on September 4 on a commercial flight; while initially described as a three-day period of personal leave, sources cited by the publication suggested this return was connected to his permanent removal from the mission.

Appointed by Secretary-General António Guterres on April 9, 2026, to succeed Major General Erdenebat Batsuuri, Minhazul Alam remains the active head of the peacekeeping mission. The UN has not indicated any further formal investigation or change in his status, maintaining that he continues his responsibilities in Cyprus.
