Cyprus to launch Red Flag digital platform to combat domestic violence

Cyprus is preparing to launch a new digital platform called "Red Flag" by the end of 2026, aimed at improving the prevention and management of domestic and gender-based violence. The initiative seeks to establish a centralized system that connects the Police, Social Welfare Services, and various non-governmental organizations, ensuring that reports and early warning signs are effectively coordinated rather than siloed.

Anastasia Papadopoulou, former president of the PHONI Council, described the project as a critical tool for secondary prevention, allowing authorities to intervene before vulnerability escalates into severe violence or femicide. Diana Constantinidi, a member of the Direct Democracy movement, noted that the model is inspired by Norwegian systems. She emphasized the necessity of implementing a robust legal framework to protect sensitive personal data and warned that existing support structures, such as shelters, remain insufficient, specifically citing the lack of facilities in areas like Ayia Napa.

The project comes in response to rising concerns regarding domestic safety, with official data indicating approximately 10,000 reports of gender-based violence filed over the last five years. While the platform is expected to bridge communication gaps, stakeholders are currently focused on ensuring legal compliance and data security to avoid endangering the very individuals the system is designed to protect.
