China and Cyprus mark diplomatic milestones and discuss global governance

On September 9, 2026, the Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus, Yang Yundong, addressed a seminar regarding the Global Governance Initiative. The event, co-organized by the Chinese Embassy and the Center for Socio-Political Thought "Politeia," highlighted the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Cyprus, as well as the five-year anniversary of the establishment of their Strategic Partnership.

Ambassador Yang emphasized the alignment of both nations on international issues and their mutual support for multilateralism. Regarding the Cyprus dispute, he reaffirmed China's commitment to a comprehensive, fair, and sustainable solution, based on United Nations resolutions and the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation. The seminar also served as a platform to introduce the Global Governance Initiative, which was originally announced by China on September 1, 2025.

The discussions underscored the ongoing cooperation between the two countries. The Chinese ambassador expressed Beijing's willingness to continue playing a constructive role in the resolution of the Cyprus problem, reinforcing the strength of bilateral ties and shared diplomatic objectives.
