AKEL appoints Charis Polykarpou as new press spokesperson

The Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the AKEL party in Cyprus has announced the appointment of Charis Polykarpou as the new press spokesperson. He replaces Giorgos Koukoumas, who is stepping down from the role to assume increased parliamentary responsibilities.

Charis Polykarpou, aged 42, is an economist who previously served as the head of the economy sector for the AKEL Central Committee. A native of Nicosia with roots in Gerolakkos, he holds degrees from the Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University, as well as a postgraduate degree from Queen Mary University of London. His professional background includes experience as a parliamentary assistant at the European Parliament, where he focused on economy, labor, and internal market issues. Polykarpou has been a member of the party's Central Committee since 2016, a member of the Political Bureau since 2021, and has served on the Secretariat of the Central Committee since 2025.
