International investigation launched after thwarted assassination plot in Cyprus

A sophisticated international assassination plot targeting British twin brothers Jamie and Aaron Small was uncovered in Cyprus following a sting operation. The conspiracy began on August 10, when a user known as "Sponge Jobb" posted a solicitation for a hitman on the encrypted messaging app Signal, offering $60,000 in cryptocurrency. A Danish police officer posing as an assassin responded to the ad, leading to an international investigation involving Europol and law enforcement from multiple countries.

Authorities have arrested eight individuals in connection with the case. The first arrests occurred on August 27, involving one Irish national and two others (identified by some sources as Danish and by others as Norwegian). Subsequent intelligence led to the arrest of five Swedish nationals in Paphos. During searches, police recovered a firearm, masks, and disposable gloves. Evidence suggests the assassins allegedly procured weapons and ammunition from Turkey.

Following the disclosure of the plot, the targets, Jamie and Aaron Small, went into hiding and remain missing. Law enforcement agencies are actively working to locate them, noting that they deactivated their mobile phones once they became aware of the threat. While the five suspects arrested in Paphos have denied involvement, claiming they were on vacation, authorities are continuing to investigate the connections between the various detainees to determine if these arrests comprise a single coordinated plot or separate criminal activities.
