Doctors face felony charges over the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis

Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis died on September 9, 2026, following a cardiac arrest during a plasma exchange procedure at a private clinic in Kolonaki, Athens. Doctors Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka are now facing felony charges for fatal exposure to danger. Investigations revealed significant discrepancies in the defendants' testimonies, specifically regarding the singer's arrival time, which witnesses and a taxi driver confirmed as 13:55, contradicting the doctors' claim of 16:00. Digital evidence, including deleted logs and a hidden photo of the patient on the procedure table, suggests attempts to tamper with data.

The investigation is further complicated by allegations that the facility was cleaned before police arrival and that no emergency help was immediately summoned, with the singer allegedly left unconscious for nearly 90 minutes. Ilias Theodoropoulos claimed he was away for lunch, yet surveillance footage reportedly places him outside the clinic during the incident. The defendants are currently in custody and scheduled to provide formal statements to the investigator on September 14. The singer’s funeral is planned for the same day at the 3rd Cemetery of Nikaia.
