Fatal fire breaks out on cargo ship in Qingdao, China

At least 20 people have died following a massive fire on a foreign-flagged cargo ship docked at a shipyard in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao. The incident occurred on September 10, 2026, at approximately 11:15 local time (03:15 GMT) while the vessel was undergoing maintenance. According to reports from Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, there were 42 people on board at the time of the fire. Twelve individuals were successfully evacuated, and five remain hospitalized in stable condition.

Following the outbreak, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered all-out search and rescue efforts, while Premier Li Qiang directed authorities to prioritize the rescue of trapped crew members and prevent secondary disasters. Firefighting teams brought the blaze under control and extinguished it within approximately three hours.
