UNFICYP promises increased visibility in the Deneia buffer zone

On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Khassim Diagne, met with the community leader of Deneia, Charalambos Alexandrou, and local farmers. The meeting, which was initiated by the local community council, addressed growing concerns regarding security and frequent violations within the buffer zone.

During the discussion, attended by approximately 15 UN officials, representatives from the Deneia community requested a more proactive approach from the mission to deter incursions from the occupied northern side. Specifically, farmers urged the UN to increase patrols and move beyond an observational role to actively intervene in incidents. While Diagne promised that UNFICYP would attempt to maintain a more visible presence in the area, he and his delegation clarified the mission's operational constraints, explicitly stating that they cannot take additional measures or use force.

The meeting highlighted the ongoing friction between the local agricultural community and the limitations of the UN's peacekeeping mandate. While the UN acknowledged the concerns of the residents, no further administrative or security changes beyond the pledge for increased visibility were announced.
