Parliament in occupied territories forms committee to investigate shipwreck

On September 10, 2026, the legislative body in the occupied territories officially approved the creation of a parliamentary investigation committee to examine the causes of a recent shipwreck off the coast of Kyrenia. The inquiry aims to determine whether the maritime tragedy was the result of administrative failure or professional negligence.

The committee composition sparked political disagreement between the ruling National Unity Party (UBP) and the Republican Turkish Party (CTP). CTP leader Sila Usar Incirli demanded that the committee be led by the opposition to ensure impartiality, given that the incident occurred under the current coalition government of UBP, DP, and YDP. However, Prime Minister Unal Ustel rejected this request, insisting that the government must maintain leadership. Consequently, the five-member committee will consist of three UBP deputies and two CTP members.

While the committee is tasked with administrative and political oversight, officials emphasized that legal and criminal proceedings remain within the jurisdiction of the judiciary. Prime Minister Ustel stated that the government has structured the administrative process to maintain transparency and continues to support the ongoing judicial review of the incident.
