Parliamentary inquiry launched following fatal shipwreck off Kyrenia

The parliament in the occupied territories has established a five-member parliamentary committee to investigate a maritime tragedy that occurred off the coast of Kyrenia. The disaster, which took place thirteen days ago, resulted in 14 confirmed fatalities, and search operations for missing individuals remain ongoing. The committee, chaired by Ahmet Savasian of the UBP party, consists of three members from the ruling UBP and two from the opposition CTP, despite opposition calls for a more independent leadership structure.

Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arikli has faced significant public pressure and calls for resignation regarding his handling of the incident. During a parliamentary session, Arikli rejected all accusations of negligence, asserting that no specific action or failure on his part contributed to the tragedy. He challenged the critics by citing past maritime accidents in Turkey as a precedent for why ministerial resignation is not warranted.

While search efforts continue, a specialized vessel capable of operating at depths greater than the current 554-meter site is en route from Istanbul. The ship is expected to arrive by Sunday evening or Monday morning to assist with the recovery efforts. The investigative committee is tasked with determining whether the sinking of the Filo Jet was caused by administrative failure or negligence.
