Investigation into the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis

Authorities in Athens have launched a major investigation into the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a plasmapheresis treatment at a medical office in Kolonaki. On September 10, 2026, police, including units of the Hellenic FBI, searched the clinic and seized records, digital evidence, and two plasmapheresis machines. Giorgos Patoulis, head of the Athens Medical Association, stated that the facility was licensed only as a pathology clinic and was not authorized to perform plasmapheresis, nor were the machines declared in their records.

The two physicians operating the clinic, Ioanna Gaka and Ilias Theodoropoulos, have been brought to the Kypseli Police Security headquarters for questioning. Evidence suggests the medical equipment was in operation during the incident, contradicting initial statements from the doctors. Additionally, security footage reportedly indicates the singer arrived earlier than the staff initially claimed. The singer's family has requested a technical consultant for the autopsy, which has been rescheduled from September 10 to the morning of September 11. Police are also conducting searches at the singer's home as part of the ongoing criminal inquiry, with officials indicating that formal charges against the physicians are likely to follow.
