Doctors arrested following the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis

Greek authorities have arrested two doctors, Ioanna Gaka and Ilias Theodoropoulos, on charges of fatal exposure following the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis. The incident occurred at their private clinic in Kolonaki, Athens, where the singer suffered a cardiac arrest while allegedly undergoing a plasmapheresis treatment. Following a court-ordered investigation by the Athens Medical Association and the Greek forensic investigations unit, authorities seized digital evidence and medical records. Officials reported that the clinic was licensed only as a general medical practice and lacked the proper authorization for plasmapheresis equipment, two units of which were found on-site.

Contradictions emerged in the medical staff's testimony, as forensic analysis of the equipment showed it had been in operation for 45 minutes, contrary to initial claims that the procedure had not commenced. Security footage also allegedly contradicted the timeline provided by the physicians regarding the singer's arrival time. The victim's family has requested a technical consultant to be present during the autopsy, which has been rescheduled for Friday, September 11, 2026. The two doctors remain in police custody while investigations continue, with the singer's sisters also providing statements to the authorities.
