Two doctors arrested following the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis

Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis died on September 9, 2026, at the age of 54 following a cardiac arrest at a private medical practice in Kolonaki, Athens. Police subsequently arrested two doctors, Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka, who face felony charges of fatal exposure to danger. Authorities are investigating a crucial three-hour gap between the singer’s arrival at the clinic and the emergency call to the national ambulance service, during which a plasmapheresis procedure reportedly took place. Police have identified significant contradictions in the initial testimonies, including discrepancies regarding the arrival time and the extent to which medical equipment was utilized.

The investigation, which involves the Homicide Division, has led to the seizure of medical records, digital devices, and various substances from the facility. The family’s lawyer, Charalampos Lykoudis, announced that the medical examiner’s report confirmed the absence of pre-existing heart disease, prompting the family to request an upgrade of the charges to homicide with possible intent. Following a preliminary investigation, the Athens Public Prosecutor's Office has brought formal charges of felony exposure resulting in death. The two doctors have been referred to an investigator and are expected to request time to prepare their defense. Meanwhile, the singer's funeral is scheduled for September 14, 2026, at the Third Cemetery of Athens in Nikaia.
