Police warn public of phone scam impersonators

Cypriot authorities issued an urgent warning on September 10, 2026, regarding a persistent phone scam involving individuals impersonating officers from the police Cybercrime Sub-Directorate. Fraudsters contact victims by telephone, speaking fluent Greek, and falsely claim that the recipient has been a victim of online fraud. The callers use what appear to be local Cypriot landline numbers, though investigators suspect these may be spoofed numbers originating from overseas.

Under the guise of investigating the alleged cybercrime, the scammers request sensitive personal and banking information. The primary objective of the perpetrators is to harvest personal data and facilitate the theft of funds from victims' bank accounts. Police emphasize that they never contact members of the public to request such information in this manner.

Authorities are urging citizens to exercise extreme caution, remain vigilant against such unsolicited calls, and refuse to provide personal or banking data.
