Scientific committee presents 12-year recovery plan for Cypriot livestock sector

Dr. Stavros Malas is presenting a comprehensive 12-year recovery and reconstruction plan for the Cypriot livestock sector at the Presidential Palace. The initiative follows the recent foot-and-mouth disease crisis, which exposed significant structural vulnerabilities including disorganized unit zoning, inadequate biosecurity measures, and insufficient national strategies.

The proposed strategy, which was initially reviewed by the President and government ministers on August 27, aims to modernize the sector through genetic improvement, the creation of model livestock facilities, and the implementation of strict biosecurity protocols. Following the President's instructions, this latest session serves as a public consultation phase involving various stakeholders, including farmers' unions, agricultural organizations, and the chambers of commerce (KEBE and OEB), to refine the study before moving toward official adoption and implementation.

While the plan offers a strategic roadmap for the long-term sustainability of the industry, there remains public and professional skepticism regarding whether these high-level proposals will be effectively translated into government action or remain unimplemented in official archives. The government is now tasked with securing the necessary funding to transform these scientific recommendations into reality.
