United States marks 25th anniversary of September 11 attacks

On September 11, 2026, the United States observes the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that occurred in 2001. New York City is hosting central memorial events at Ground Zero, supported by high security measures to commemorate the victims of both the 2001 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

The ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial features the traditional reading of 2,983 names of those killed. Officials have scheduled six moments of silence corresponding to the times when the aircraft struck the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, the crash of Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, and the subsequent collapse of the towers. Notably, a seventh moment of silence will be introduced for the first time to honor individuals who later died from illnesses associated with the aftermath of the attacks.

Additional activities include an interfaith memorial at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, attended by Archbishop Elpidophoros, and a concert by the New York Philharmonic and the Army Field Band chorus. The anniversary serves as a reflection on the lasting geopolitical and social shifts that have redefined global security since the tragedy.
