Nicosia pelican crossings malfunction addressed by mayor

On Thursday, September 10, 2026, multiple pelican crossings in Nicosia became non-functional, leaving pedestrians unable to trigger green walk signals. The affected locations included the Aluminium Tower T-junction at Limassol and Aglandjia Avenues, the Apoel T-junction at Makarios and John F Kennedy Avenues, and the crossing at the junction of Makarios Avenue and National Guard Street. Pedestrians reported being forced to wait for breaks in traffic or risk crossing dangerous, busy intersections.

Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos announced on September 11 that the municipality’s technical team and an external maintenance contractor have identified the faults and are working toward an immediate resolution. The mayor noted that while the previous government-run 'FixCyprus' reporting platform is currently unavailable due to technical errors, the city has transitioned to the 'Novoville' mobile application for reporting infrastructure issues. Officials are urging residents to utilize this system to flag ongoing maintenance concerns as they arise.

Prior to this incident, similar malfunctions were observed on Stasinos Street at Eleftheria Square, which have since been repaired. The municipality continues to monitor the situation, with repairs expected to be completed in the immediate future to restore pedestrian safety across the capital's road network.
