Princess Diana's iconic revenge dress to be auctioned by Sotheby's

The iconic black silk off-the-shoulder dress worn by Princess Diana in 1994, widely known as the "revenge dress," is set to be auctioned by Sotheby's in New York on December 9. Designed by Greek creator Christina Stambolian, the garment has an estimated valuation between $150,000 and $300,000.

Diana originally commissioned the piece in 1991 but hesitated to wear it for years, fearing it was too daring. She ultimately donned the dress for a Vanity Fair charity dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in London on June 29, 1994. The public appearance occurred on the same night that then-Prince Charles admitted to his infidelity in a televised interview. The outfit, characterized by its form-fitting silhouette and asymmetric hem, became a historic symbol of her independence and break from royal protocol.

Prior to the final auction, the dress will be displayed in a global tour, starting in London from September 18 to 24, followed by Hong Kong from October 1 to 15, Geneva from November 6 to 11, and finally New York beginning December 2.
