Staffing shortages reported at Famagusta General Hospital

On September 11, 2026, Yiannis Karousos, President of the Famagusta District Organization and Member of Parliament, formally raised concerns regarding severe understaffing at the Famagusta General Hospital. He has addressed a letter to the Minister of Health and the President of SHSO (OKYpY), demanding immediate intervention and a clear timeline to resolve deficiencies in essential medical specialties and nursing staff coverage.

According to the report, the hospital lacks a daily pulmonologist, with visits occurring only three to four times per month despite treating serious pulmonary cases. Furthermore, neurological coverage is limited to once a week, while patients suffering from strokes and other serious conditions face waiting lists for examinations that extend six to seven months. Mr. Karousos criticized these conditions as unacceptable for a regional hospital, noting that the ongoing staffing gaps prevent the facility from providing safe and effective healthcare services to the local population.
