State employment in Cyprus increases by 0.8 percent in August 2026

According to data published by the Statistical Service, the number of state employees in Cyprus reached 53,080 in August 2026, marking an increase of 419 people (0.8%) compared to August 2025. This growth follows a slight increase of 0.4% in the average number of civil servants during the period from January to August 2026.

The distribution of employment reveals divergent trends across sectors. While employment in the Public Service sector declined by 1.0%, both the Educational Service and Security Forces experienced a growth of 2.2%. Among employee categories, indefinite-term staff saw the largest overall increase of 3.0%, while hourly-paid personnel saw a marginal decline of 0.1%. Notably, indefinite-term staff in the Educational Service surged by 26.0%. Conversely, fixed-term employment in the Security Forces plummeted by 96.6%, a shift primarily attributed to the conclusion and non-renewal of specific fixed-term contracts since August 2025.

The Education Ministry currently maintains the highest number of personnel and expenditure within the state apparatus, supported by significant hiring in the educational sector. The Statistical Service reports that these adjustments reflect the state's strategic approach to managing its human resources, particularly regarding the transition of temporary contracts into permanent or indefinite roles.
