Nine suspects held for another week following Kyrenia shipwreck
On September 11, 2026, the Kyrenia district court extended the detention of nine individuals by seven days in connection with the August 30 shipwreck off the coast of Kyrenia. The suspects include the captain, the first mate, two engineers, additional crew members, and the director of the shipping company, Filo Jet. Tensions were high outside the courthouse as relatives of the victims and missing persons gathered to protest, calling the suspects "murderers," while strict security measures were enforced.
The police investigator revealed that approximately 300 statements have been taken, with more required. Evidence currently under review includes the Filo Jet decision logbook and a 2003 accident report for the vessel. Authorities are also investigating a video sent by a missing person to their family, which allegedly shows water entering the ship shortly after departure and a broken mooring bollard. Furthermore, investigators are searching for five additional individuals and are waiting for a response from Turkish authorities regarding the validity of the captain's license. The investigation remains active as authorities continue to process documentation and witness testimonies.
