Annita Demetriou calls for resumption of Cyprus negotiations

During a speech to the Nicosia District Council on September 10, 2026, the President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), Annita Demetriou, emphasized the party's readiness to contribute to the resumption of substantive negotiations on the Cyprus issue. Demetriou identified the resolution of the Cyprus problem as a top priority for her party, arguing that progress requires composure, collective effort, strategic planning, national consensus, and responsibility.

The DISY leader reaffirmed that a viable settlement must lead to the liberation and reunification of Cyprus, explicitly rejecting the presence of occupation troops, foreign guarantees, and intervention rights. She further underscored the necessity of close cooperation and full coordination with Greece. Demetriou also highlighted ongoing internal party processes, including meetings of the Political Bureau and the Cyprus Group, as well as the dissemination of information to elected officials in occupied municipalities and communities, with the dialogue now expanding to the district level.

Additionally, Demetriou referenced the results of recent elections as a significant validation of the party's current trajectory. She expressed gratitude to party members and the public for their trust, noting that the electorate chose a path of seriousness and responsibility over short-term political posturing or empty slogans.
