Cypriot teams begin their EHF European Cup campaign

Cypriot handball teams Parnassos Strovolou and Omonia 29M marked the start of the 2026 EHF European Cup for local clubs, representing part of a record six teams from Cyprus participating in European competitions this season.

Parnassos Strovolou played both matches of the first round against Slovenia's Gorenje Velenje at the Rdeca Dvorana stadium on September 12 and 13. The Cypriot club suffered consecutive defeats, resulting in their elimination from the tournament. In contrast, Omonia 29M celebrated its historic first European appearance by defeating the Lithuanian side Granitas-Karys 25-21 in the first leg held on September 12 at the Kyriakos Pissis stadium in Strovolos.

Omonia 29M currently holds a four-goal lead and will travel to Lithuania for the return leg, scheduled for September 20 at 17:00, where they will aim to defend their advantage and secure qualification to the next round. The broader context includes a record-breaking presence for Cyprus, with six clubs competing across men's and women's European handball tiers this season.
