European Commission approves 34 million euro aid for Turkish Cypriot community in 2026

On September 11, 2026, the European Commission announced the approval of a 34 million euro aid programme designated for the Turkish Cypriot community for the year 2026. The initiative is designed to foster socioeconomic development and facilitate the broader reunification process in Cyprus by strengthening ties between the island's two communities.

The funding will be directed toward several key sectors, including the modernization of school infrastructure, energy projects, and advancements in wastewater and waste treatment. Notably, the package includes support for the Nicosia Bi-communal Sewage Treatment Plant, specifically initiatives for the reuse of treated water. Economic growth will be stimulated through the empowerment of small and medium-sized enterprises, the promotion of innovation, and the expansion of trade opportunities, particularly through the Green Line.

Furthermore, the programme ensures continued alignment with European Union standards regarding food safety and animal health. This includes ongoing support for the island-wide Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) system for halloumi cheese. The aid also maintains support for established bicommunal efforts, such as the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and the Committee on Missing Persons, reinforcing the Commission's commitment to reconciliation efforts.
