AKEL General Secretary meets with Minister of Health to discuss the future of the General Healthcare System (GeSY)

On Friday, September 11, 2026, the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, held a meeting with the Minister of Health, Neofytos Charalampidis, at the AKEL offices in Nicosia. The discussion focused on the current status and future outlook of the General Healthcare System (GeSY) in Cyprus.

Stefanou described the meeting as creative and thorough, emphasizing that GeSY remains a significant social achievement that provides universal and equitable access to healthcare regardless of personal income. Despite acknowledged problems, deficiencies, and distortions within the system, he argued that the current operational period provides sufficient data to assess its performance. The primary concern expressed by AKEL is the long-term preservation and strengthening of the system.

The parties agreed on the necessity of completing a comprehensive mapping of the system's needs. This mapping is intended to serve as a framework for future decisions regarding the sustainability and improvement of the broader public health sector.
