Health Minister and Akel leader discuss Gesy assessment

On Friday, September 11, 2026, the General Secretary of the Akel party, Stefanos Stefanou, met with Minister of Health Neophytos Charalambides at the party’s headquarters in Nicosia. The primary focus of the discussion was the necessity of completing a comprehensive assessment of the needs of the national health scheme, known as Gesy, to ensure its long-term sustainability, efficiency, and quality of service.

Stefanou emphasized that despite existing shortcomings, distortions, and various operational challenges, Gesy has successfully demonstrated its capacity to provide universal and equal access to healthcare, regardless of a citizen's income or social status. Both parties agreed that such an assessment is crucial for rationalizing expenditures and informing future policy decisions.

Furthermore, the Akel leader highlighted the state’s obligation to support public hospitals to foster healthy competition within the health sector.
