Nicosia intensifies mosquito control efforts following heavy rainfall

The Municipality of Nicosia has launched intensive mosquito control spraying operations across the city following a recent surge in mosquito breeding sites caused by heavy rainfall. The combination of intense storms, high temperatures, and sustained sunlight has created ideal conditions for the rapid multiplication of various mosquito species across both public and private areas.

According to Michalis Lagos, head of the Nicosia Health Services, addressing the problem requires active cooperation from residents. Data from the municipality indicates that more than 60% of breeding grounds are located within private homes and courtyards. Health officer Efi Chatzikosti confirmed that while spraying is a year-round effort, the frequency has been increased in response to the recent weather and an influx of citizen complaints.

Efforts remain ongoing as municipal teams continue to treat identified hotspots. Officials emphasize that different mosquito species require specific, tailored interventions, necessitating a multi-faceted approach to pest control throughout the coming weeks.
