Europol uncovers illegal horse meat trafficking ring in Europe

On September 8 and 9, 2026, Europol supported a major cross-border operation targeting a criminal network involved in the illegal trade of former racehorses. Nearly 200 investigators participated in raids across Ireland, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium to dismantle a scheme that funneled retired horses into the human food chain.

The suspects are accused of falsifying official documents and tampering with animal microchips to misrepresent the history of the horses. Many of these animals had been administered medications that rendered their meat unsafe and prohibited for human consumption. By manipulating these records, traders allegedly transformed horses with little market value into commodities sold for between 1,000 and 1,500 euros each. During the investigation, authorities inspected over 1,000 horses and seized several animals.

The operation is currently being coordinated by prosecutors in the Belgian city of Dendermonde. Authorities are continuing to analyze the collected evidence to determine the full extent of the network's activities, as investigations into the illicit supply chain remain ongoing.
