Funeral and vigil held for Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis

Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the age of 54 following a cardiac arrest during a medical procedure at a private clinic in Kolonaki. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. Thousands of fans, friends, and family gathered at the Holy Trinity Church in Nikaia, the singer's childhood neighborhood, to pay their final respects during an all-night vigil that began on Sunday, September 13, at 19:30.

Throughout the vigil, mourners sang the artist's greatest hits, chanted "immortal," and left flowers and heartfelt notes at the church. His family, including his parents and sisters Maria and Vasso, were present to receive the thousands of attendees. Despite initial reports suggesting a private ceremony, legal representatives confirmed that the funeral service held today at 13:00 would be open to the public to allow his followers to bid farewell. Following the service, his burial will take place in a private family ceremony at the Third Cemetery of Athens. The family has requested that donations be made to Humanity Greece in lieu of funeral wreaths.
