Explosion at a residence in Sotira leaves 30-year-old in critical condition

On the evening of Friday, September 11, 2026, around 21:20, an explosion occurred in the garage of a home in the village of Sotira, Famagusta district. A 30-year-old foreign national, who is known to local authorities for past criminal activities, was found severely injured at the scene. He was initially transported to the Famagusta General Hospital and subsequently transferred to the Nicosia General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit, having suffered multiple injuries including the amputation of a limb.

Police and bomb disposal experts secured the area and collected evidence, confirming that the explosion was caused by a low-power improvised explosive device. The Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) of Famagusta is actively investigating the incident. Authorities are currently exploring two primary scenarios: either the victim was handling the explosive device himself when it detonated, or he was the target of a criminal act.
