Nepal estimates reconstruction costs at 4.78 billion dollars following deadly flood

The government of Nepal announced on September 11, 2026, that the total reconstruction cost following the catastrophic flood on August 26 is estimated at 4.78 billion dollars (4.12 billion euros). The disaster, triggered by the collapse of a glacier and rocks on a mountain peak, devastated the Bhotekoshi River valley along the border with China.

According to official data provided by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Chhetri, the tragedy resulted in over 1,400 deaths and at least 5,600 injuries across Nepal and China. The floods caused massive destruction to infrastructure, including bridges, roads, and power facilities, forcing thousands of residents into temporary camps. Hundreds of individuals, including foreign tourists, pilgrims, and dam workers, remain missing. Approximately 57.67 million dollars have been earmarked for immediate rescue operations and initial reconstruction efforts over the next six months.
