New phase of restoration begins at Hagia Sophia in Istanbul

A new phase of structural reinforcement and restoration works has commenced at the Hagia Sophia monument in Istanbul, as announced by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism on September 11, 2026. These interventions are focusing on the eastern semi-dome and the area surrounding the mihrab, which is the niche indicating the direction of Mecca. This project is being carried out simultaneously with ongoing maintenance efforts on the monument's main dome.

To facilitate these repairs, authorities are installing a specialized steel work platform. According to Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, the structure will provide safe access for specialists to conduct essential maintenance on mosaics and marble surfaces, alongside broader structural strengthening of the historic building. The Ministry confirmed that all work is proceeding according to the established project schedule.

The restoration initiative represents a continued effort by the Turkish authorities to preserve the structural integrity and artistic heritage of the landmark.
