Infrastructure upgrades planned for Cyprus waste management facilities

Cypriot authorities are implementing urgent upgrades to waste management facilities in Kosiya and Pentakomo ahead of a long-term national strategy covering 2029–2035. The Department of Environment is currently drafting a sustainability study for the national municipal solid waste network, which will define final infrastructure requirements. Regardless of this long-term plan, immediate repairs are deemed necessary to maintain operational capacity.

The Water Development Department (WDD), which took over the Pentakomo site on December 19, 2023, reported that the facility was delivered in poor, unmaintained condition by the previous contractor, leading to excessive waste landfilling and safety risks. To prevent a sanitary crisis, the WDD initiated over 180 urgent contracts. Planned improvements include restoration of the sanitary landfill, construction of the third phase, mechanical sorting repairs, and leachate treatment upgrades.

Moving forward, a new tender is being processed for a contractor to manage, repair, and upgrade the Pentakomo unit for a five-year period, with two optional one-year extensions. Parallel efforts are being coordinated by the Larnaca-Famagusta Waste Management Council for the Kosiya facility, ensuring that all current works integrate into the definitive national upgrade scheduled for 2030.
