Nicosia EOA proposes independent national water authority to improve infrastructure

On September 12, 2026, the Nicosia District Self-Government Organization (EOA) proposed the establishment of a single, financially and administratively independent water authority. EOA president Constantinos Yiorkadjis stated that this body would manage the entire water cycle, including supply, sanitation, irrigation, resource management, consumer pricing, and future infrastructure investments, noting that desalination alone is insufficient to address regional water scarcity.

This proposal follows severe weather in late August that exposed major systemic weaknesses, specifically the lack of a unified rainwater drainage network, which was previously fragmented among individual municipalities. To address these issues, the EOA will begin €2.3 million worth of repair and reinforcement works on the Digenis Akritas culvert between Vasilopotamos and Kotsirkas next month. Additionally, the organization is advancing studies for new stormwater drains near the Apoel stadium and in the Engomi area, with construction expected to commence early next year.
