Prison riot and fire in Kobani result in seven deaths

A riot at a prison in the northern Syrian city of Kobani, which houses a majority Kurdish population, resulted in at least seven deaths and dozens of injuries on Saturday. According to state media, inmates set fire to the facility, causing flames to spread through several dormitories, with victims dying from burns or smoke inhalation. The unrest followed a week of local protests triggered by the murder of Sami Sehmuhs Hiso, a former Kurdish fighter.

This incident is the first of its kind since the Syrian government and Kurdish leadership formalized an integration agreement in January. Kurdish leader Mazlum Abdi announced last month that the integration of Kurdish political and military institutions into the Syrian state was complete, followed shortly by the formal dissolution of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. The situation remains sensitive as the region navigates these recent structural changes.
