Investigation into the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis at a private clinic

Popular Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis passed away on September 9, 2026, after suffering a cardiac arrest during a plasmapheresis procedure at a private medical clinic in the Kolonaki district of Athens. Two doctors, Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka, are currently under investigation following allegations of medical malpractice and attempts to conceal evidence. Digital forensic analysis of the clinic’s software revealed that the plasmapheresis machine was operational for 42 minutes starting at 14:14, contradicting claims by the medical staff that the procedure had not yet commenced. Authorities are also scrutinizing an 84-minute gap between the machine stopping at 14:57 and the emergency services (EKAB) being called at 16:21.

Reports indicate that the doctors allegedly attempted to delete electronic records and photographs taken during the incident. An investigation into potential tampering is ongoing, with police having recovered crucial digital data. The doctors are scheduled to appear before a prosecutor on Monday to address these discrepancies.

In the meantime, the family has organized a public wake at the Holy Trinity Church in Nikaia on September 13, followed by a funeral service on September 14 at the Third Cemetery of Athens. The family has requested that donations be made to Humanity Greece in lieu of funeral wreaths.
