Fatal workplace accident at construction site in Peyia

A fatal workplace accident occurred on Saturday, September 12, 2026, around 2:30 p.m. at a construction site on Kokkinokampos Street in Peyia, Paphos. Konstantinos Posnagkov, a 52-year-old worker from Georgia and a permanent resident of Cyprus, died after suffering a severe electric shock. During concrete-pouring operations, the boom of a pump used for delivering ready-mix concrete made contact with and severed two overhead electricity cables carrying 11,000 volts. The victim was transported to Paphos General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Following the incident, police arrested the 46-year-old building contractor and the 53-year-old operator of the concrete pump. Both individuals were detained under court warrants for investigation into potential charges of causing death through a reckless, negligent, or dangerous act. They have since been released following questioning. The scene was cordoned off for forensic examination.

The Department of Labour Inspection, in coordination with the police and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances. Preliminary findings by the Department of Labour Inspection indicate a lack of proper coordination during the construction activities. Authorities continue to review the safety design, risk parameters, and operational protocols that led to this fatal incident.
