Four-year-old boy dies after falling from a sixth-floor apartment in Nicosia

On the evening of Saturday, September 12, 2026, a four-year-old boy of African origin died after falling from a sixth-floor apartment in the Engomi area of Nicosia. The child was found injured on the ground floor around 6:15 p.m. and was rushed to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 7:00 p.m. The family, which includes the parents and an 18-month-old sibling, was inside the apartment at the time of the incident.

Following the tragedy, police arrested the boy's 32-year-old father and 33-year-old mother. On Sunday, the Nicosia District Court issued a five-day remand order for both parents to facilitate an investigation into potential negligence or reckless acts leading to the death. The parents have reportedly claimed that the child went to the bathroom and subsequently fell from an open window, which had been left unsecured due to the heat.

A post-mortem examination, conducted by state pathologists Angeliki Papetta and Orthodoxos Orthodoxou, confirmed that death resulted from a high-altitude fall and found no evidence of physical abuse. The Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID) continues to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident, while the parents remain in custody.
