Four-year-old boy dies after falling from sixth-floor balcony in Engomi
A tragic incident occurred on the afternoon of September 12, 2026, in Engomi, Nicosia, resulting in the death of a four-year-old boy. The child fell from the balcony of an apartment located on the sixth floor of a residential building on Andrea Mitropoulou Street, suffering a fatal drop of approximately 20 meters. Despite emergency services being summoned by the father and the boy being rushed to the Nicosia General Hospital, medical staff confirmed his death.
The family, of African origin, consisting of four members residing legally in the apartment, was present during the incident. Police, specifically the Nicosia CID, are currently investigating the circumstances, focusing on whether the fall resulted from a lapse in supervision or other environmental factors. The child was reportedly behind glass-enclosed balcony doors at the time of the fall.
Following the tragedy, authorities issued judicial arrest warrants for the boy’s parents, a 32-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman. They were taken into custody on Saturday night on suspicion of causing death through reckless, careless, or dangerous acts. The suspects are scheduled to appear in court for the issuance of detention orders as the investigation continues. A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted by the director of the Forensic Medicine Service, Angeliki Papetta.
