Turkey condemns US extension of arms embargo lifting for Cyprus

The United States has decided to extend the lifting of the arms embargo on the Republic of Cyprus for another year, valid until September 30, 2027. This diplomatic decision, aimed at facilitating defense cooperation, has drawn sharp criticism from Ankara and the leadership of the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry issued an official statement arguing that the move negatively impacts regional stability and undermines trust between the two communities on the island. Ankara claims that the Republic of Cyprus is intensifying pressure on the Turkish Cypriot population and engaging in excessive armament activities. Furthermore, Turkey, asserting its role as a guarantor power, stated it would continue to take necessary measures to protect the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot community.

While Turkish officials warn that such actions disrupt the balance of power, the Republic of Cyprus maintains that its defense policies are a sovereign right aimed at protecting its territory, population, and interests, rather than posing an offensive threat to neighboring nations. There is currently no indication of a change in the U.S. policy or a reversal of the decision following the Turkish objections.
