AS Monaco basketball team excluded from French national leagues

On September 12, 2026, the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) officially rejected AS Monaco’s application to participate in the Nationale 1, the third tier of French basketball. This decision, finalized during a meeting of the Federal Bureau, follows a negative recommendation from the Management Control Commission (CCG), which cited the club's inability to provide sufficient evidence of its financial stability and credibility. The ruling effectively leaves the 2026 French champions without a place in any national competition just days before the season commences.

The crisis stems from ongoing economic instability despite several appeals filed by the club. Earlier reports suggested potential investment from former player Jamal Mashburn; however, Mashburn publicly clarified that he never invested funds in the team and that negotiations had not reached a final agreement. Consequently, the club’s future remains precarious.

AS Monaco, which won the French league titles in 2023, 2024, and 2026, and reached the EuroLeague final in 2025, now faces a complete collapse of its professional operations. Following this definitive denial from the Federation, the team is currently excluded from all national league tiers, marking a drastic decline for the historically successful organization.
