Passenger ship Virgo Transport 8 sinks in Indonesia

A passenger vessel named Virgo Transport 8, carrying 243 people, sank on September 13, 2026, while traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The ship encountered severe weather conditions during its journey. Communication with the vessel was lost after the captain reported that the ship was listing around 02:00 WIB.

Indonesian search and rescue operations were immediately launched to locate the vessel. According to the local rescue chief, I Putu Sudayana, a total of 103 individuals have been retrieved from the water. Among those recovered, one person has been confirmed dead, while 102 others were rescued. Currently, 140 passengers remain missing as authorities continue their search and rescue efforts in the area where the signal was last transmitted.

Regional authorities and tugboats have been deployed to the site of the incident to assist in the ongoing search operation. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shipwreck is currently underway as rescuers work to locate the remaining passengers.
