Large wildfire threatens communities on the Croatian island of Brac

A massive wildfire, which ignited on the evening of Thursday, September 10, 2026, on the western side of the Croatian island of Brac, has expanded significantly, threatening residential areas. By late Saturday, the blaze had consumed approximately 3,000 hectares of pine forests and brushwood. As the fire approached the municipality of Milna, which has about 1,000 inhabitants, local authorities activated an emergency alarm system, sending mobile alerts to residents and tourists warning them of the potential danger.

Currently, about 180 firefighters supported by 50 vehicles and multiple Canadair aerial units are struggling to control the fire due to high, shifting winds. While the national firefighting administration has confirmed that all emergency teams are mobilized to prevent the flames from reaching homes, no mass evacuation has been ordered at this stage. Efforts to contain the blaze are ongoing as officials monitor the situation to protect the local population and tourists on the island.
