Mother files complaint over lack of breastfeeding facilities at correctional facility

An anonymous mother has formally complained about the lack of appropriate breastfeeding facilities during her visits to a correctional facility in Cyprus. The woman, who visits the facility to see her partner, the father of her eight-month-old child, reports that the absence of a private space has repeatedly hindered her ability to nurse the infant, sometimes forcing her to cut visits short.

The complainant states she has raised the issue with prison administration multiple times with inconsistent results. On May 20, 2026, when her baby was four months old, she was denied access to a private area despite explaining the necessity of breastfeeding, prompting her to file an official complaint with the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights and the Commissioner for the Protection of Children's Rights.

The grievance highlights the ongoing struggle to accommodate parental needs within the prison system. The formal investigation by the relevant ombudsmen is pending, as the mother seeks a permanent solution that would allow for private and dignified breastfeeding during visitation hours.
