Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis reaffirms defense stance from Kastellorizo

On September 13, 2026, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the island of Kastellorizo to assert Greece's commitment to national security and regional stability. During his address, he emphasized that while Greece seeks good neighborly relations and dialogue, it remains firmly opposed to external threats and the questioning of its sovereign rights. He described Greece's foreign policy as patriotic and realistic, aimed at protecting European borders while maintaining a posture of national integrity.

To bolster its defense capabilities, the government is proceeding with the procurement of Rafale jets, as well as Belharra and FREMM frigates. A cornerstone of this strategy is the "Achilles Shield" project, a bilateral defense agreement with Israel focused on advanced anti-aircraft and anti-ballistic systems. Notably, the Prime Minister announced that the central command and control software for this system will be developed domestically by Greek companies to ensure the source code aligns with national operational requirements. This technological initiative is designed to upgrade the country's aerial defense system to a new level of strategic readiness.
