United States extends the lift of arms restrictions on Cyprus for 2027

The United States government has officially renewed the lifting of International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) restrictions on the Republic of Cyprus for the 2027 fiscal year. This policy, which permits the export, re-export, and transfer of defense materials and services from the U.S. to Cyprus, will remain in effect until at least September 30, 2027. The decision is being framed by both nations as a significant milestone in their expanding strategic partnership, particularly in security, crisis management, and civilian evacuation operations.

President Nikos Christodoulides described the extension as a clear signal of strengthening bilateral relations. He noted that beyond this specific decision, the two countries are collaborating on multiple defense programs, including the modernization of the Andreas Papandreou Air Base and ongoing discussions regarding the procurement of additional defense systems. For the first time, Cypriot students are also attending U.S. military academies.

While the current extension remains on an annual basis, Nicosia is actively pursuing long-term legislative initiatives within the U.S. Congress to secure a five-year lifting of the embargo. Government officials maintain that current defense cooperation is at an unprecedented level as both nations prioritize stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
