US extends defense trade authorization for Cyprus through 2027

The United States government has officially renewed the waiver of International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) defense restrictions for the Republic of Cyprus for the 2027 fiscal year. This decision, valid until September 30, 2027, permits the export, re-export, and transfer of defense articles and services to Cyprus. Nicosia welcomed the extension as a reflection of the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations in security and defense.

President Nikos Christodoulides described the move as a clear signal of the strengthening bilateral relationship. Beyond this regulatory update, the government is currently engaged in talks regarding the procurement of U.S. defense equipment and the modernization of infrastructure, specifically the Andreas Papandreou Air Base. For the first time, Cypriot personnel are also attending American military academies as part of this enhanced cooperation.

While this annual renewal is viewed positively, the Cypriot government is actively pursuing a more permanent, long-term removal of the arms embargo, ideally spanning at least five years, through legislative initiatives in the U.S. Congress. Meanwhile, Cyprus continues to prepare for high-level diplomatic discussions at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York, where officials aim to achieve progress in re-starting negotiations to resolve the long-standing Cyprus issue.
